InfantSEE®

Your baby’s first year is full of exciting milestones — smiling, crawling, sitting up, and learning to explore the world. But did you know that your child’s vision development also follows important stages during this time?

At Allied Vision Plainsboro, we proudly participate in the InfantSEE® program, offering a no-cost baby eye exam in Plainsboro Township to help parents ensure healthy visual development right from the start.

AGE VISION
At Birth
  • Newborns can focus on objects less than a foot away, such as a parent’s face during feeding.
By 3 Months
  • Babies begin to follow moving objects and may start reaching for things.
  • It’s normal if their eyes don’t always move together during the first 6–8 weeks.
By 6 Months
  • Both eyes should begin to focus together evenly.
  • Brain activity indicates the potential to see fine detail, 20/20.
  • Eye/body coordination continues to improve.
By 9 Months
  • Babies begin to rely more on eye contact rather than physical contact for interaction.
  • The coordination between vision and movement becomes stronger.
By 12 Months
  • Infants typically start using both eyes together to judge distance accurately, which is crucial for crawling, walking, and exploring their surroundings.

What Is the InfantSEE® Program?

The InfantSEE® program, developed by the American Optometric Association (AOA), provides one free, comprehensive infant eye exam for babies between 6 and 12 months old. This public health initiative makes professional eye care accessible to families regardless of income or insurance status.

At Allied Vision Plainsboro, our optometrists are certified InfantSEE® providers and are specially trained to examine infants using gentle, non-invasive techniques and baby-friendly tools.

When to Bring Your Infant for An Eye Exam

While every infant should have a baseline exam by their first birthday, some babies are at higher risk for vision problems, including:

  1. Premature infants

  2. Babies with low birth weight

  3. Infants with a family history of significant eye conditions

  4. Babies born into populations with higher rates of visual concerns

Early detection gives your child the best chance for healthy visual development.

What to Expect During Your Baby’s Exam

During your infant’s comprehensive eye exam, our doctors evaluate:

  • Visual acuity: How clearly your baby can see
  • Refractive status: Checking for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism
  • Eye movements and tracking: Ensuring proper development of motor coordination
  • Eye alignment: Detecting potential misalignments early
  • Overall eye health: Using lights, toys, and other non-invasive tools to examine the eyes safely

The entire exam is gentle, comfortable, and painless for your baby.

Our Commitment Through the InfantSEE® Program

The InfantSEE® program is a national public health initiative designed to make infant eye and vision care an essential part of overall wellness during your baby’s first year. Its purpose is to support healthy vision development and improve a child’s quality of life through early detection and intervention.

Through the program, our goals are to:

  • Identify and address risk factors early that may affect your baby’s eye health and vision development

  • Detect conditions like amblyopia (“lazy eye”) and other vision problems before they impact long-term sight, spatial awareness, or cognitive growth

  • Educate parents on the importance of early infant eye care and how vision supports learning and development

During an InfantSEE® exam, our doctors evaluate several key aspects of your baby’s vision and eye health, including:

  • Visual acuity: Clarity of vision

  • Refractive status: Detecting nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism

  • Eye movements and tracking: Ensuring healthy motor coordination

  • Eye alignment and binocular vision: Confirming that both eyes work together properly

  • Overall eye health: Checking for early signs of disease or developmental concerns

By identifying potential problems early, we help set the foundation for healthy vision, optimal development, and lifelong learning.
